A book on Bosnian Muslims - inmates of Jasenovac system of Ustaši camps by Nihad Halilbegović appeared recently. Named Bosniacs in Jasenovac camp book is published by of Chamber of Congress of Bosniac Intellectuals and contains 502 pages
 

 

SERBIAN DELEGATION AT THE HOLOCAUST TASK FORCE MEETING IN BUDAPEST

 
On December 3-6 Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research meeting took place in Budapest. For the first time, a delegation from Serbia participated and Zoran S. Popović, aide in Ministry of Foreign Affairs supplied request of Serbia for membership; Serbia is accepted as candidate. In the wake of the meeting, Mr. Vuk Drašković slammed down recent Iran's actions on Holocaust denial.
 

 

STUDENTS OF THEOLOGICAL COLLEGES IN VISIT TO JASENOVAC

 
During a seminary on Jasenovac held in October 2005 teachers at theological high schools proposed in future for all generations of students to be mandatory to visit Jasenovac. In November the Holy Assembly of Bishops already accepted the proposal and during this year students of theological colleges of Sremski Karlovci, Srbinje/Foča and Cetinje visited Jasenovac and Donja Gradina.
 

 

WALDHEIM AFFAIR RESEARCHER IN YAD VASHEM

 
Author of a book on 'Waldheim affair' and current affiliate of New York based Jasenovac Research Institute Danko Vasović visited Jerusalem in November. During his stay he met with Yad Vashem Council Chairman and former Minister of Justice Mr. Yossef Tommy Lapid and Mr. Efraim Zuroff of Simon Wiesenthal Center. Mr. Vasović donated The Black Book on suffering of the Yugoslavian Jews, recently republished by JRI, to Yad Vashem Library and copies of movies about NDH and Jasenovac from the Belgrade Cinematheque to Yad Vashem archives.
 

 

CHANGES IN JASENOVAC COMMITTEE

 
At its Autumn session in November 2006, the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church accepted petition of retired Bishop of Herzegovina and Zahumlje Atanasije (Jevtić) and released him from the membership of Jasenovac Committee. [More »]
 

 

MILAN KOLJANIN SUCCEFULLY DEFENDED HIS Ph.D. THESIS

 
On November 21 Milan Koljanin successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis The Jews and anti-Semitism in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia 1918-1941 at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Belgrade University. The academic committee that evaluated Koljanin's work was headed by Ljubodrag Dimić, and included Đorđe Stanković who led Koljanin during his work on dissertation and Milan Podunavac from the Faculty of the Political Sciences. Milan Koljanin's M.A. thesis was published as monograph volume on Sajmište death camp; he is appraised author of numerous studies on the Holocaust and genocide issues. He is working in the Institute for Contemporary History in Belgrade.
 

 

NEW MUSEUM AND EDUCATIONAL CENTER OPENED GATES AT THE JASENOVAC MEMORIAL AREA

 
On November 27 renewed museum and educational centre opened gates at Jasenovac Memorial Area, in the presence of Croatian president Stipe Mesić, prime-minister Ivo Sanader and speaker of the parliament Vladimir Šeks. His grace, the Serbian orthodox bishop of Slavonija Sava (Jurić), member of Jasenovac Committee, attended the ceremony, together with Roman-catholic bishop of Požega Antun Škvorčević, representatives of Jewish and Roma community, survivors, anti-fascist fighters, ambassador of Serbia Radivoj Cvjetićanin and many guests from abroad.
 

 

АN INTERNATIONAL CONFERRENCE ON THE HOLOCAUST IN SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE IN SARAJEVO

 
During October 27-29 Sarajevo hosted an international conference on Holocaust research in the South-Eastern Europe. Dozens of men and womean from all over the world participated, among them a member of Jasenovac Committee, hieromonk Jovan (Ćulibrk).
 

 

THE BOOK ON THE ROLE OF PART OF THE ROMAN-CATHOLIC CLERGY IN WWII REPUBLISHED

 
Association of the Fighters of Republic of Srpska presented yesterday in Banja Luka reprinted edition of the book Documents on Anti-National Work and Crimes of a Part of the Roman-Catholic Clergy , originally published almost sixty years ago. The book was presented by Veljko Đurić Mišina and Ratko Krneta. r.
 

 

CALL FOR ROMANIS VICTIMS OF GENOCIDE IN WWII TO SUBMIT REQUEST FOR COMPENSATION

 
Fondation for Romani Holocaust of Serbia & Montenegro called on all Romani victims of the Second World War to submit their requests for compensation until December 31 this year.
 

 

MUSEUM IN JASENOVAC WILL OPEN TOMMORROW

 
Re-opening of Museum in Memorial Area Jasenovac was announced long time ago. After negative previews, clashes and changes, tommorrow Museum with a new concept will open its doors. His Grace Bishop of Slavonia Sava will attend the event.
 

 

TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FUND FOR GENOCIDE RESEARCH

 
Yesterday at noon , on November 25, in Cultural center „Vuk Karadžić“ in Belgrade a symposium was held on the occasion of 10 th Anniversary of The Fund for Genocide Research , all the time under presidentship of Mr. Milan Bulajić. Father Dragoslav Topolac greeted the participants in the name of Jasenovac Committee.
 

 

DELEGATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL TASK FORCE ON HOLOCAUST EDUCATION IN VISIT TO SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO

 
International Task Force was formed on Swedish initiative in 1998, when founding countries accepted Stockholm Declaration. By accepting this Declaration, countries are obliged to introduce the Holocaust education as mandatory subject in schools.

SERBIAN FOREIGN MINISTER IN YAD VASHEM AND WITH EFRAIM ZUROFF

 
During his visit to the State of Israel at the beginning of this month, Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Drašković on Sunday, November 5, visited Yad Vashem, where he was given tour and met Yad Vashem Chairman Mr. Avner Shalev. Same day in the evening Mr. Drašković met Mr. Efraim Zuroff of Jerusalem Simon Wiesenthal Center and discussed cases of Rojnica, Ašner and Kepiro.
 

 

COMMON PRAYER IN JASENOVAC?

 
After meeting of Roman-catholic Bishop of Požega Škvorčević and rabbi Kotel Da Don on Friday November 5, an initiative for common prayer in Jasenovac was revealed. Orthodox Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana Jovan supported initiative “if it will lead to common understanding and to overcoming of petty politics”.

A book of Predrag Ilić The Serbian Orthodox Church and Mystery of Dachau­ gave some important facts about the stay of Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović and Patriarch Gavrilo in the camp, but also incited polemics.
 

 

A NEW BOOK ON JASENOVAC

 
Fund for Genocide Research from Belgrade tried to collect all materials concerning 60 th anniversary of uprising of last Jasenovac inmates. The result is book Jasenovac – Days of Remembrance on the Victims of Genocide 2005/06.
 

 

MEMORIAL FOR JASENOVAC VICTIMS TO BE BUILD IN BANJA LUKA

 
One of main city squares in Banja Luka will get a memorial for the victims of Jasenovac camps in near future. Building contract was signed by mayor of Banja Luka Dragoljub davidovic and director of “Krajina” building company on November 1. The author of the memorial is Zoran Banović .

SIMPOSION OF ISRAELI AND SERBIAN HISTORIANS AT YAD VASHEM



 
On Thursday June 15 at 09:45 in Yad Vashem will begin symposium of Israeli and Serbian historians on the Holocaust in Yugoslavia. Together with Yad Vashem, co-organizers are Ministry of Culture of Serbia and Museum of Genocide Victims from Belgrade. First lecture will held Chairman of Yad Vashem Directorate Avner Shalev.
 

 

GERMANY OPENS ARCHIVES OF CONCENTRATION AND DEATH CAMPS

  During a US visit in April German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries announced that Germany will open archives in former SS Baracks in Bad Arolsеn, containing facts about inmates of Nazi-Germani concentration and death camps. From 1960 archives were out of reach even for Yad Vashem, exclusively Red Cross could search for names and only after request of the family of a victim.

EPHRAIM ZUROFF AGAIN PROTESTS TO AUSTRIAN AUTHORITIES BECAUSE OF MILIVOJ AŠNER

 

On March 31 Ephraim Zuroff, in the capacity of Director of Jerusalem Simon Wiesenthal Center, protested to Austrian Authorities because of slow process of extradition of Milivoj Ašner. Ašner, now living in Klagenfurth, was chief of Ustaši police in Slavonska Požega in years 1941-1942, during most severe persecution of Serbs, Jews and Romas in Nazi satellite Independent State of Croatia.

ZORICA STIPETIĆ NEW HEAD OF THE COUNCIL OF JASENOVAC MEMORIAL AREA

 
After his election became polemical issue not only in Croatia, Zoran Prpić recently submitted his resignation, and Zorica Stipetić was elected on the post of the head of the Council of Jasenovac Memorial Area. “Jasenovac have to be monument to the victim, not to the crime, but individuality can not put collectivity in the shade as well”, said Stipetić, announcing revisions of the conception of the new exhibition in Jasenovac museum.

THIRD SESSION OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE ASSOCIATION JASENOVAC-DONJA GRADINA

 
On February 13 2006 the Executive Council of the Association Jasenovac-Donja Gradina held its third session in the National and University Library of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka. Zita Turgeman and Yiftach Meiri from Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Authority came to begin cooperation with the government of Srpska in the Holocaust education. EFRAIM ZUROFF ASKED CROATIA AGAIN TO DEMAND EXTRADITION OF MILIVOJ AŠER

Director of Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Jerusalem, Ephraim Zuroff, informed recently Croatian government that former Ustaši policeman Milivoj Ašner, accused for numerous crimes at the time of the Second World War, not anymore holds Austrian citizenship, and therefore Croatia can demand his extradition. “I don’t want nice words anymore but action,” is Zuroff’s message to Austrian authorities.
