MEMORIAL AREA JASENOVAC PUBLISHED A LIST OF VICTIMS

 
Memorial Area Jasenovac published a book „List of Names of Victims of Jasenovac Concentration Camp“, edited by Jelka Smreka and Đorđe Mihovilović, Memorial Area custodians. List contains names of 72.193 persons that authors gathered and checked until now.

 

STUDENTS OF BELGRADE THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE VISTED DONJA GRADINA

 
Third year students of the St. Sava Theological College from Belgrade visited Republic of Srpska on October 20 and 21. During their stay, they visited permanent exhibit on Jasenovac in National museum of Srpska in Banja Luka and venerated New Martyrs of Jasenovac on the Jasenovac killing ground and grave site, Donja Gradina.

 

JASENOVAC MEMORIAL SITE GOT AWARD AS A GARDEN

 
In April this year, the jury of the International Carlo Scarpa Prize for Gardens has decided unanimously to dedicate the 2007 award to a vast open space along a bank of the River Sava near the town of Jasenovac in Croatia, until 1941 the site of a brick kiln and from 1941 to 1945 a concentration camp.

 

FOURTH MILETIĆ’S VOLUME OF DOCUMENTS PUBLISHED

 
Koncentracioni logor Jasenovac - Knjiga IV, published recently by Gambit from Jagodina, is a long awaited new tome of documents about Jasenovac system of concentration and death camps, compiled by Antun Miletić, former head of the Belgrade based Institute for the Military History. Its three previous volumes from 1986 (I & II) and 1987 (III) still are the basic published source for Jasenovac research.

 

CROATIAN ROMAN-CATHOLICS REQUEST STEPINAC TO BE CANONIZED

 
Several Roman-Catholic associations from the Archdiocese of Zagreb have made a request to Pope Benedict XVI to canonize late Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac as saint next year, during 110th anniversary of his birth and 10th anniversary of his beatification. Anyhow, Stepinac and his conduct of Church affairs during the Second World War will continue to be among the most disputed issues in Yugoslav historiography.

 

IVO ROJNICA, USTAŠA WAR CRIMINAL DIED UNPUNISHED

 
Ivo Rojnica, a former Ustaša high ranking officer for the area of Dubrovnik, suspected of war crimes against Serbs, Jews and Roma in that area during the Second World War, died on the 1st of November in Buenos Aires. Alen Budaj, director of Margel Institute in Zagreb applied a protest note with the Republic of Croatia authorities, concerning the fact that deceased war criminal Rojnica had never been brought to justice.

“KRISTALLNACHT” COMMEMORATED IN BELGRADE

 
Commemoration of “Kristallnacht” took place at the Central Hall of the Army of Serbia on the 8th November - the International day against fascism and Anti-Semitism, organized by the Ministry of Religions. Topic of the event was “Denial of the Holocaust and genocide today”, and the lecturer was Ms. Shulamit Imber from Yad Vashem.

 

NEW BELGRADE MUNICIPALITY CRITICIZES CONCERTS ON THE PLACE OF STARO SAJMIŠTE (SEMLIN) CAMP

 
The head of the New Belgrade Municipality is protesting against organizing concerts at the place of the former death and concentration camp Staro Sajmište (Semlin). British group “Kosheen” is scheduled to play on November 3 in “Poseydon” club which is at the place of the former camp.

 

REMEMBRANCE EVENT IN KRALJEVO

 
A thousand people gathered on October 14 in Serbian city of Kraljevo to pay respect to the victims of the German WWII massacre. The clergy of the Diocese of Žiča served a memorial service.

CHILDREN OF JASENOVAC IN MILAN

 
On May 28, the exhibition on children in the Jasenovac system of concentration camps They Were Only Children, already shown in Bari and Napoli, was open in Milan. After successful opening, the exhibition stayed in Milan until June 8.

HOLOCAUST HISTORIAN RAUL HILBERG DIED AT 81

 
Raul Hilberg, one of founders of the Holocaust research and author of the famous book The Destruction of the European Jews died on Saturday, August 4, in Willington, Vermont. His book Perpetrators, Victims, Bystanders (those terms he introduced into the Holocaust terminology) was published in Serbian in 2001.

A NEW BOOK ABOUT WAR LOSSES OF SERBIA

 
On Thursday, July 14, a book by Dušan Vrućinić will be presented at the Army of Serbia Center in Belgrade. The name of the book is Demographic Losses of Serbia Caused by Wars in XX Century and it is published recently this year by the Belgrade based Museum of the Genocide Victims. The event will be held at 13:00, and Jovan Mirković, Milovan Radovanović, Mirko Grčić, Dragan Cvetković will participate same as the author.

SIMON WIESENTHAL CENTER AGAINST TOMPSON’S CONCERT IN SARAJEVO

 
Effraim Zuroff, head of Jerusalem’s Wiesenthal Centre supported the opposing of Thompson holding a concert in Sarajevo. Most famous song of a Croatian singer "Jasenovac i Gradiška Stara" is a praise to murderers in Jasenovac death camp.
 

 

STRAINED RELATIONS BETWEEN VATICAN AND YAD VASHEM

 
The Vatican ambassador to the Holy Land Monsignor Antonio Franco said Thursday that he will not attend the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day state ceremony at Yad Vashem in protest over a caption at the museum that states that Pope Pius XII did not protest the Nazis' mass murder of the Jews during the Second World War. Vatican is actually preparing canonization of pope Pius XII.

BAD AROLSEN RESOLUTION SUBMITTED TO THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

 
Whole year after media announced opening of the SS-archive in Bad Arolsen (www.jasenovac-info.com), members of the body controlling the archive still didn’t agreed about it. The Archive contains records on 17 million inmates who passed through the Nazi-German concentration camps.

Director of the Jerusalem branch of Simon Wiesenthal Centre Mr. Efraim Zuroff met on Wednesday March 15 with Serbian prime minister Vojislav Koštunica and president Boris Tadić in Belgrade. Zuroff openly satisfied with with words, but expect deeds and offers help in establishing of a memorial center at the place of the WWII Sajmište German death and concentration camp. Zuroff also met Bishop of Bačka Irinej.

Catholic bishop of Požega Antun Škvorčević led his clergy on Monday, March 12, on pilgrimage to the former concentration and death camps in Stara Gradiška and Jasenovac. It is for the first time in the history of the Roman-Catholic Church in Croatia that such delegation made pilgrimage to the places of crimes.

WINTER SEMINAR FOR EDUCATORS HELD IN YAD VASHEM

 
January 7-25 a regular Seminar for Educators from Abroad was held at International School for Holocaust Education. The twelfth participant of Jasenovac Committee of the Serbian Orthodox Church at three-week seminar was Mr. Dražen Višnjić from Banja Luka, while hieromonk Jovan (Ćulibrk) participated at the opening of the seminar at Prima Kings hotel in Jerusalem. At the same time, ten days long seminar was held for educators from Croatia.
 

 

COMMEMORATION OF THE VICTIMS OF ’RACIJA’ – EFRAIM ZUROFF IN NOVI SAD

 
On January 23, 65th Anniversary of the ’Racija’ in Novi Sad was commemorated. Bishops Irinej and Porfirije, same as the Rabbi of Belgrade Isaak Asiel held memorial services, Efraim Zuroff of Simon Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem and mayor of Novi Sad Maja Gojković gave speeches. On January 21-23, 1942, 1246 citizens of Novi Sad, mainly Jews ansd Serbs, were slaughtered by Hungarian gendarmes.
