JASENOVAC COMMITTEE DELEGATION AT A CONFERENCE IN JERUSALEM

The Sixth International Conference on Holocaust and Education was held between July 6th and 11th at Yad Vashem - the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem. Among more than seven hundred participants from fifty-two countries all over the world, a special place had a delegation of Jasenovac Committee of the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The participation of Jasenovac Committee at the Conference is fruit of agreement between Chairman of Yad Vashem Directorate and Mitropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Amfilohije who visited Yad Vashem during the stay of a delegation of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthovox Church in Jerusalem last December. The delegation was made of graduates of Yad Vashems’ International School for Holocaust Studies, where some forty of our candidates studied since 2003, sixteen of them under auspices of Jasenovac Committee or in coordination with it. Delegation was augmented by a producer from the Alternative Television from Banja Luka, who covered the event for media.

Thirteen-member strong Jasenovac Committee delegation delivered three well-attended workshops: Silvija Krejaković from Kraljevo National Museum with associates held an alegorical performance People-Books about the suffering in Kraljevo, Kragujevac, Sajmište and Jasenovac; well-known tradditional Balkan singer Svetlana Spajić showed in her workshop how oral music tradition preserved remembrance on suffering and protosingel and Jasenovac Committee coordinator Jovan (Ćulibrk) spoke about the interference between the Holocaust and the contemporary culture in the case of British band Joy Division. Jasenovac Committee associates took part also in several additional programs held in Yad Vashem during the Conference.

An important as well as polemical workshop was held by Julija Koš from Zagreb Jewish community, where she showed that a new exhibition at the Museum of Jasenovac Memorial Area in Croatia is not aprropriate for educational use. Ms. Koš was accompanied at the Conference by Mr. Saša Milošević from the Serbian National Council.

During its stay in the Holy Land the delegation venerated its Holy Places and visited the Monastery of Kapernaum on the Holy Apostles feast, where His Beatitude Teofilos, Patriarch of Jerusalem served Holy Liturgy. His Beatitude received and blessed the delegation and showed special interrest in the health of His Holiness Patriarch Pavle. The delegation also had a meeting with Ms. Shulamit Imber, Pedagogical Director of Yad Vashem and Mr. Arie Livne, the soecial envoy of the World Jewish Congress to the countries of Former Yugoslavia and a representative of the Republic of Srpska in the State of Israel.
