In accord to the amendments to the Law on national and other public holidays, which the Serbian Parliament adopted on December 5, April 22 will be the National Remembrance Day for the victims of Holocaust and genocide and all victims of fascism in the Second World War. Beginning from 2012, Serbia will mark the two new national holidays – October 21 as the Remembrance Day of Serbian victims in the Second World War, and November 11 as Armistice Day in World War I.

At the plenary session of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, held on December 1, 2011 in The Hague, Serbia was unanimously accepted as full Member Country of this respectable organization.

In early September Historiography of the Holocaust in Yugoslavia a book written by Jovan Ćulibrk, has been released as a joint edition of Belgrade Institute for Theological Research and Faculty of Security Studies. [More »]

А groundbreaking international conference about the Jadovno Camp System was held in Banja Luka on June 24 and 25, 2011, attracting some fifty participants from Serbia, Croatia, Israel, USA, Italy, Germany, Russia, Austria, Republika Srpska, and marking a turning point in the approach to history of Holocaust and genocide in the NDH, and in the memorialization of the victims.

On October 20, the Day of liberation of Belgrade, the movie A Good Father – Daughter’s Indictment by Yoash Tatari was shown in the Cultural Center Rex. The premiere was attended by Beate Neimann, the heroine of this full-length documentary telling the story on how she, as daughter of Bruno Sattler, head of the Gestapo in occupied Serbia, faces the truth about her father and the crimes he was responsible for. The film won the Gold World Medal at a New York film festival on January 30, 2004.

With the blessing of His Holiness Irinej, Serbian Patriarch, the church of Holy Ascension of God and the Publishing Fund of the Archbishopric of Belgrade and Karlovac organized a pilgrimage to the monastery of Jasenovac, in the Diocese of Slavonija, on September 13, 2011, on the Feast day of the Jasenovac New Martyrs. The international Holocaust seminar, entitled The Diverse Survival Strategies of Jewish and Roma Communities in Macedonia: From Resistance to Memorialization was held in Ochrid, from September 26 to October 2, 2011, where Bishop of Lipljan Jovan (Ćulibrk), coordinator of Jasenovac Committee and monk Pavle (Kondić), the Committee’s associate, participated. The historian Antun Miletić’s 23rd book: “The Assassinated in the Jasenovac Concentration Camp 1941-1945” (Gambit, Jagodina, 2011, 900 pages), was recently presented to the public and almost immediately renamed by the journalists into “Encyclopedia of the dead” of Jasenovac. [More »]

The new volume of „Dveri Srpske“ magazine, dedicated to the sufferings of Serbs in Croatia during the 20th century, was presented on June 3, in the International Press Centre, Belgrade. The volume 47-50, entitled “Indenpendent State of Croatia - State of Genocide” contains a series of articles on different aspects of genocide against Serbs in Croatia, including brief histories of two Ustashe death camps, Jadovno and Jasenovac.

On Sunday, April 17th 2011, a commemoration and a wreath-laying ceremony were held at the Jasenovac Memorial Site in Croatia, by the Stone Flower Monument, in memory of April 22nd 1945, the day of inmates’ breakthrough from the Jasenovac concentration and death Camp. [More »]

The President of the Republic of Srpska Milorad Dodik opened the Fifth International Conference on Jasenovac, held in Banja Luka on May 24th and 25th. At the conference held in Banski dvor, more than 60 conference papers and survivors testimonies have been presented. [More »]

“The ideology of nation and race: The Croatian Ustasha Regime and its Policies toward Minorities in Independent State of Croatia, 1941-1945,” (Croatian Studies Review, Vol. 5, 2008); is doctoral thesis of Nevenko Bartulin (University of New South Wales, Australia, 2007) which fills the gap described by author as such: “The way the Ustashe ‘imagined’ the Croatian nation has received little attention from historians. This is because the historiography has always centered on the attempt to establish an independent state, which is represented by historians as the main Ustasha aim.” [More »]

British educator Martin Winstone published last year a book named The Holocaust Sites in Europe: An Historical Guide. With an introduction by Sir Martin Gilbert, book gave place to Jasenovac and Donja Gradina, as well as to the other places of extermination in Yugoslavia.

With the blessing and hospitalty of His Grace Bishop of Šumadija Jovan and organised by Jasenovac Committee, the third seminar on education about Jasenovac was held in Kragujevac. It was realised through cooperation with Yad Vashem Memorial Authority, embassies of the Russian Federation and the State of Israel, Museum of Genocide Victims and Memorial Park Kragujevac October.

On February 14, 2011, Hungarian Prosecutors charged Képíró in relation to the massacre in Novi Sad in January 1942. The trial will take place in Budapest on May 5.
