The Renewal of the Church in Jasenovac Celebrated

On Sunday, September 4, 21st Anniversary of the renewal of the church in Jasenovac was celebrated by Liturgy, served by two bishops. The church of the Birth of Saint John the Forerunner was destroyed on the very beginning of existence of the notorious Jasenovac concentration and death camp. In great pains, as result of counter-activities of communist government, church was renewed after forty years. During the magnificent gathering of people from both Krajinas – Bosnian and one in today’s Croatia, on September 4 1984, Serbian Patriarch German sanctified the church. Since then, first Sunday after the Ascension of the Mother of God is the day of the feast of the Renewal of the Church of Saint John.

This year, Bishop of Gornji Karlovac Gerasim and Bishop of Slavonija Sava with priests celebrated the holy liturgy. After the liturgy, His Grace Gerasim blessed festal bread, and afterwards bishops blessed newly erected cross in the Monastery yard. His Grace Sava mounted the Holy Cross on the place of the martyrdom to bless alive and the dead in Jasenovac and Donja Gradina and to renew monastic life in this Monastery by its force.

The renewed parish church of Saint John His Grace Sava turned into monastery in the year of 2000. Today, Bishop himself resides in the Monastery.
